Cricket South Africa on September 5 (Tuesday) announced the senior men's national squad for the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup. The 15-member roster will be led by captain Temba Bavuma as some of the big names in white-ball cricket marked their return to the Proteas' squad for the quadrennial competition.
Another big development came in the form of Quinton de Kock, who is set to retire from ODIs after the culmination of the ODI World Cup in India. The wicketkeeper-batter is a pivotal cog in the Proteas setup and over the years, the left-handed batter has won several matches for his country with outrageous batting.
On paper, South Africa's squad brims with talent, one which can blow away any opposition on a given day. The fast bowling attack oozes pace and experience with Kagiso Rabada leading the charge while Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jansen add more firepower. In the spin department, the duo of Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi are bound to play a huge role on Indian picthes.
In batting, David Miller, de Kock, Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen can prove to be devastating against any bowling attack.
“It’s great having a mix of experienced players and players who will be competing in their first 50-over World Cup - you get that sort of exuberance of excitement to be doing something for the first time,” Rob Walter, South Africa white-ball coach said.
"Similar to the level of experience, we have endeavoured to curate a well-balanced group of players and skill, that will allow us to effectively adapt to the conditions in India.
“Under the leadership of Temba and the senior group, I have the utmost faith this squad will make South Africa proud,” he added.
