Sri Lanka suffered a major setback when their skipper Dasun Shanaka was ruled out of the ongoing ODI World Cup which took a big hit to the Islanders' campaign. But to bolster Sri Lanka's squad two veterans in the form of Angelo Mathews and Dushmantha Chameera have been recalled to their World Cup squad as the duo will be joining the team in India as traveling reserves.

"Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce that Angelo Mathews and Dushmantha Chameera will join the team in India as traveling reserves.

The Sri Lanka Cricket Selectors took this decision in order to ensure that the team has ready replacements in place to face contingencies, such as an injury to an existing squad member," Sri Lanka Cricket's statement read.

Dushmantha Chameera's initial exclusion from the World Cup was due to an injury sustained during the 2023 Lanka Premier League (LPL). Consequently, he missed the subsequent Asia Cup tournament, and his most recent international appearance dates back to a bilateral series against Afghanistan.

As for Angelo Mathews, he marked his return to the ODI squad in early 2023 after a two-year absence. Since his comeback, the former captain has featured in three ODIs, amassing a total of 30 runs. Considering his injury history, if selected, he is likely to contribute solely as a batsman, as his most recent bowling performance in ODIs occurred in 2020.

Currently, Sri Lanka find themselves at the bottom of the World Cup table, having suffered three consecutive defeats. Despite securing their place in the tournament through the qualifiers, the subcontinent team occupies the tenth position in the points table after encountering defeat in all three of their 2023 World Cup matches.

Sri Lanka's campaign got off to a discouraging start as they conceded a World Cup-record total of 428 runs against South Africa in Delhi. This setback was followed by subsequent losses to Pakistan and Australia.

In their upcoming fixture, the 2023 Asia Cup runners-up are scheduled to face The Netherlands on Saturday, October 21 at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. Currently, Sri Lanka's opponents occupy a more favorable position, sitting two places above them in the table and boasting a two-point advantage after three matches.
