Jos Buttler-led England cricket team defeated Rovman Powell's West Indies by 8 wickets in match 42 of the ongoing edition of the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia, on June 20 (Thursday). Phil Salt won the Player of the Match award as his unbeaten half-century helped the English side pick up a comfortable win in their first Super 8 win. Windies suffered their first loss of this mega tournament, which also ended their 8-match win streak in T20I matches. After the match, Powell talked about the English player who hurt them the most, every time both sides are colliding.
Rovman Powell on Phil Salt
The Windies captain expressed on their first loss of this marquee event. He spoke about the underwhelming performance of the bowlers. He also gave update on Brandon Kings's injury before talking about Phil Salt.
“When you look from the batting perspective, we were 15-20 runs short. We could have given a better display with the ball as a bowling group. We couldn't capitalise in the last five overs but credit to the English bowlers, they executed their plans very well. (On Brandon King's injury) Just a bit worried, but hopefully he can pull through for the next game. It's always difficult, every time he plays against WI, he hurts us. We couldn't execute our plans against Phil. Our destiny is in our own hands and we need to win well, we need to continue playing good cricket,” said Rovman Powell in the post-match presentation.
Phil Salt's astonishing numbers vs WI
The styling English opener has 478 runs in 9 innings against West Indies. He has the most T20I runs by a batter in clashes between England and Windies side. Salt bats with an average of 68.28 and with a strike rate of 186.71. He also has two fifties and two hundreds in matches against the Caribbean side.

West Indies batting first posted 180/4 on the scoreboard. However, it was not enough in front of the English batting, who managed to chase it down with 15 balls remaining. The Three-Lions demonstrated absolute dominance in the batting.
