Rovman Powell-led West Indies picked up a historic win against Rashid Khan's Afghanistan in match 40 of the ongoing edition of the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Daren Sammy Stadium in St Lucia, on June 18 (Tuesday). This was also the final group game of the mega tournament before the beginning of the Super 8 stage. Powell has surpassed legendary Windies cricketer Kieron Pollard for an epic feat as the West Indies captain.

Powell surpasses Pollard

Rovman Powell now has the second-most wins in T2OIs as the West Indies captain. He surpassed Kieron Pollard to reach this milestone. Powell now has 14 wins as the Winides skipper and has edged Pollard, who had 13. The list is topped by none other than the iconic Daren Sammy, who has a record number of 28 T20I wins as a captain for West Indies.

The previous best was 7 straight wins and it happened back in 2012-13. Their current 4-match win streak in the T20 World Cup 2024 is also the first time, the Windies have recorded these many consecutive wins in the mega tournament.

Rovman Powell after West Indies' big win against Afghanistan

“It feels good (to win 8 games in a row). It shows the hard work we have put in in the last year or so. The guys were excited to come here, we knew it would be one of the better batting wickets. It is on the back of hard work, Nicholas has had a good 12 months not only in franchise cricket but for West Indies as well. It is a good headache to have (McCoy picking 3 wickets). We started the tournament with a little advantage as we are playing at home and know the conditions. When I started my journey we were ranked 8 or 9 and now we are 3 in the world. The support has been incredible where ever we have gone and would hope the people would come and support us on Wednesday. I would like to thank Sammy and he has been a driving force in my journey as a leader,” said Rovman Powell in the post-match presentation.
