Iyer was in the ICU as he had lacerations to the spleen.

India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is recovering in a hospital in Sydney after “lacerations to the spleen” due to a rib injury during third and final ODI of the series. For the first time after he was in the ICU due to internal bleeding, Iyer has posted a message for his fans on social media. The batter says that he is currently in recovery. He thanked everyone for reaching out.

“I'm currently in recovery process and getting better, every passing day. I'm deeply grateful to see all the kind wishes and support I've received - it truly means a lot. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts,” Iyer wrote in a message on social media.

Iyer is currently recovering at St Vincent's Hospital. He did not need surgery and underwent a different procedure. He has already started his routine chores and will return home when he is declared fit to travel by the doctors.

The Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain has been talking to his teammates from the hospital. India's T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav said that Iyer has been texting his teammates. Also, his India and Mumbai teammate Shardul Thakur had a conversation with Iyer. Meanwhile, BCCI is arranging for Shreyas' sister, Sreshta Iyer to travel to Sydney.

Iyer is set to miss the three-ODI series at home against South Africa starting November 30. It is yet to be seen whether he regains full fitness ahead of the ODI series at home against New Zealand, starting on January 11, 2026.

Iyer moves up in ICC ODI batter rankings

While 38-year-old Rohit Sharma became the no.1 ranked ODI batter after his 'Player of the series' performance, Iyer moved up one place in the rankings as well. Owing to his half-century in Adelaide ODI, he moved up one place to take the ninth spot in the rankings.
