Former Australia captain Steve Waugh lavished praise on India's modern-day great Virat Kohli, describing the 37-year-old as the “greatest one-day player of all time” and a “once-in-a-generation cricketer” who has redefined batting in limited-overs cricket.
Virat Kohli's ODI career
Batting great Kohli is the second-highest run-getter in the history of one-day internationals and the fastest to reach every major milestone from 8,000 to 14,000 runs. In his 305 ODIs, the legendary batter amassed 14,255 runs, including a record 51 centuries, surpassing even Sachin Tendulkar’s benchmark for most hundreds in the format.
Steve Waugh for Virat Kohli
Waugh, who was there at the Gold Coast during India vs Australia 4th T20I, labelled Kohli as the greatest one-day batter of all time.
"Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are two all-time great players. Virat Kohli is probably the greatest one-day player of all time. You want to see them play everywhere. People on the Gold Coast would love to see them play, but they can't play every match," Waugh was quoted as saying by ANI.
Kohli's last ODI outing
Kohli, who already announced retirement from Tests and T20Is, recently featured in the three-match ODI series against Australia, where he had a poor outing in the first two games of the series as he got out on ducks. However, the batting maestro made his comeback in the third clash, where he anchored the chase with an unbeaten 74 off 81 balls alongside Rohit Sharma, which helped India to chase down 237 to register a nine-wicket win.
Steve Waugh for Young Team India
Apart from Kohli, Rohit has also retired from the Tests and T20Is. After their retirement, young Team India have lit up international cricket with their destructive game in the shortest format of the game. Speaking about India’s young T20I squad, Waugh said the team is filled with a group of exciting talents.
"Whilst they're still playing for India, that's fantastic. They've got a modern T20 side now, a lot of exciting stars playing. The game has got to evolve. It's always great to see all-time great players in action. Someone like Virat Kohli, that's a once-in-a-generation sort of player. If you get a chance, you want to see him play," he added.
India vs Australia T20I series
The opener clash of the five-match T20I series between India and Australia was ended without a result, and after that hosts won the second clash to take the lead, but Suryakumar Yadav-led India bounced back in style and won the third and fourth T20Is to take a 2-1 lead in the series. The fifth T20I will take place on November 8 at the iconic Gabba Stadium.
