India, after opting to bat first, were bowled out for 150 runs. However, Bumrah's four-wicket haul put India in a commanding position. India's stand-in captain, Jasprit Bumrah, delivered a devastating spell, dismissing Nathan McSweeney, Usman Khawaja, and Steve Smith in quick succession. This collapse left Australia reeling, and a total of 17 wickets fell on a lively Perth Stadium pitch on Day 1.
The pitch offered significant movement for the seamers throughout the day, making batting challenging. India, after opting to bat first, were bowled out for 150 runs. Josh Hazlewood was the pick of the Australian bowlers, claiming four wickets. However, a counterattacking 48-run partnership between Rishabh Pant and debutant Nitish Reddy provided some resistance for India.
In response to India's modest total, Jasprit Bumrah led India's bowling attack with a fiery spell, putting immense pressure on the Australian batsmen. Even after Bumrah's spell, the Australian batters continued to struggle as Harshit Rana and Mohammed Siraj exploited the conditions to their advantage.
Despite being bowled out for just 150 runs, India managed to seize control of the game due to their outstanding bowling performance. The seaming conditions in Perth clearly favored the Indian bowlers, who made the most of the opportunity.
Mitchell Marsh all praise for Jasprit Bumrah
Meanwhile, Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc was in awe of Jasprit Bumrah's exceptional bowling performance.
“Maybe, he's obviously got a fair bit of hyperextension in, that elbow and does, things, a lot of actions, one that you do. So, there's no surprise that he's been a fantastic bowler across the formats for a long time. And again, his skills were on show today as to how, how good he is," Starc said in the press conference after the close of Day 1's game.
"So, yeah, I'm sure there's something in that release point. That’s significant to his action. It's something a lot of people can't do, so I'm not, I'm certainly not going to go and try it. I’ll probably snap,” he further added.
