Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting reacted to Mohammed Siraj and Travis Head's on-field verbal spat that took place during the pink ball Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Ponting who is doing commentary duties in the ongoing series said that he got worried for India speedster as he was well aware of how umpires and match officials tend to react to such incidents.
Siraj was fined 20 per cent of his match fees after Australia defeated India in Adelaide, which would equate to roughly Rs 9 lakh. ICC also awarded both players one demerit point.
"I was in the commentary box at the time. As soon as I saw the send-off, I actually got worried for Siraj. I know how the umpires react to those things. Umpires and referees don't like seeing the send-off, pointed in the direction of the dressing room," said Ponting on The ICC Review.
Siraj was spotted giving a fiery send-off to Australia's batter after dismissing him.
"Looking back at it now, I think it was accidental the way that whole thing played out. I don't think there was any malice meant at the start," Ponting further added.
"Then the way it started and almost like the misinterpretation of what had actually gone on, I think led to how it ended," he said.
Coming back to the match, Travis Head was the highest run-getter in the second Test match as he scored 140 runs that helped Australia to register a 10-wicket dominating win against India to level the series.
Now, both India and Australia are focussing on the third Test match of the five Test match series which is scheduled to start from December 14 in Brisbane at the iconic Gabba Stadium. The Men in Blue will look to win this clash to keep their hopes alive for the World Test Championship (WTC) final which is scheduled to take place in England next year.
