Tamil Nadu wicketkeeper batter N Jagadeesan will likely to join the Indian squad as Rishabh Pant's replacement for the remainder of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025. Cricbuzz reported that the right-handed keeper-batter from Tamil Nadu is almost certain to be added to the squad. An announcement is expected soon.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee and the touring team management were looking for a suitable replacement for Pant, who has been ruled out of the series due to a fracture in his right toe. Pant who was Shubman Gill's deputy in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, sustained the injury on Day 1 of the fourth Test at Old Trafford in Manchester while batting.
Cricbuzz reported that the selectors identified the 29-year-old Jagadeesan, who is expected to join the squad ahead of the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The selectors and the team management were looking at Ishan Kishan as a potential option, and it later emerged that the 27-year-old keeper from Jharkhand is not available.
Narayan Jagadeesan has played 13 IPL matches representing Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2020/21 and 2022 and his last outing in the cash-rich league came for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2023. He scored 162* runs in his IPL career.
Rishabh Pant's injury update
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took to X on Thursday to confirm the news of Pant’s injury and informed that he won’t keep in the ongoing match but will come out to bat if needed.
"Rishabh Pant, who sustained an injury to his right foot on Day 1 of the Manchester Test, will not be performing wicket-keeping duties for the remainder of the match. Dhruv Jurel will assume the role of wicket-keeper" BCCI said.
However, despite getting injured, Pant came to bat on Day 2 after Shardul Thakur's wicket before lunch. Pant is the second highest run-getter in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy with 462 runs in seven innings, including two tons and two half-centuries.
