Star opener Yashasvi Jaiswal yet again delivered with the bat for India when it needed the most, this time in the fifth Test against England at the Kennington Oval. In his relatively brief career of just 24 Test matches, Jaiswal has firmly cemented his position as a key player for the Indian cricket team. His reputation as one of the world's premier batsmen has been built on a foundation of flamboyant batting and a remarkable ability to adapt, scoring centuries in diverse conditions including the West Indies, England, Australia, and India.
Yashasvi Jaiswal breaks Sachin Tendulkar's legendary record
However, Jaiswal's performance in the ongoing Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy was a mixed bag until he came up with another scintillating knock in the series decider. He launched the series with a spectacular hundred at Leeds but struggled to capitalise on this strong start, delivering a mixed run of scores. Despite scoring two more fifties before the fifth Test, the series was not considered a true reflection of his vast potential, leading to questions about his form heading into the final Test.
Responding to the scrutiny in spectacular fashion, Jaiswal struck a robust yet unbeaten half-century to put India in a commanding position. In the process of reaching his fifty in just 44 balls, he also broke a towering record, earlier held by Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar. This was his ninth score of 50 or more against England (three centuries and six fifties), surpassing the legendary Tendulkar's long-held record of eight such scores by an Indian cricketer at the age of 23.
Players | 50-plus Scores | Innings |
Yashasvi Jaiswal | 9* | 19 |
Sachin Tendulkar | 8 | 14 |
Md. Azharuddin | 5 | 11 |
Kapil Dev | 5 | 20 |
Rishabh Pant | 5 | 19 |
Dilip Sardesai | 5 | 11 |
Ravi Shastri | 5 | 20 |
In addition to his milestone half-century, Yashasvi Jaiswal is also on the verge of another significant six-hitting record in Test cricket against England. He has currently struck 30 sixes against the English side, placing him just four behind the legendary Viv Richards, who hit 34.
The all-time record for the most sixes against England in Tests is held by fellow Indian Rishabh Pant, who has cleared the boundary 38 times. Given his aggressive approach, Jaiswal is also in a prime position to surpass Richards and could potentially challenge Pant's overall record if he continues his innings and converts it into a substantial score.
By lunch on Day 3, India were well placed at 189/3 with Yashasvi Jaiswal (85*) and Shubman Gill (11*) intact on the crease, stretching their lead to 166 runs. Earlier, India's nightwatchman Akash Deep cracked a brave 94-ball 66 to put India in a commanding position.
