Captain Dhananjaya de Silva sees KL Rahul as Sri Lanka's biggest threat in 2-match Test series

Looks like Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva has already identified his biggest threat in the two-match Test series against India. India's return to Sri Lanka for a Test series marks their first red-ball tour of the island nation in nearly a decade, bringing a fresh-faced squad to unfamiliar conditions. The historic stalwarts of previous tours—Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Ajinkya Rahane, have given way to a new era led by Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Rishabh Pant. Yet, despite the injection of vibrant young talent, believes the most dangerous threat in the Indian lineup isn't one of the rising stars, but rather a familiar veteran.

Dhananjaya singled out KL Rahul as the real obstacle standing between Sri Lanka and success in the upcoming two-Test series. Rahul holds a unique position in the current Indian contingent as the sole member who featured in India’s last Test campaign on Sri Lankan soil back in 2017.

Pointing to that crucial institutional memory, the home skipper highlighted Rahul’s proven track record across various international conditions. According to Dhananjaya, Rahul’s blend of global success and past familiarity with local pitches makes him the cornerstone of India's batting line-up—and the main target for Sri Lanka's bowling attack.

"I would say experience-wise KL Rahul would be the biggest threat for us. He has done well all around the world and he has played a few matches in Sri Lanka as well," de Silva said in the pre-match press conference, as quoted by TOI.

During India’s 2017 campaign in Sri Lanka, Rahul made his mark as an opener in the second and third Tests, crafting half-centuries in both appearances and topping out at an impressive 85. Almost a decade later, the narrative comes full circle as he prepares to stride out to open the innings once again, this time stepping into the role of seasoned veteran beside the dynamic Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Navigating Sri Lanka's notorious spin-friendly tracks will be a major litmus test for Jaiswal, skipper Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant. With the World Test Championship (2025–2027) final in sight, India faces a high-stakes environment where securing crucial series points is essential to keeping their WTC qualification dreams intact.

The brief two-match tour kicks off with the opening Test at the iconic Galle International Stadium from August 15 to 19. The action then shifts to Colombo for the series finale, running from August 23 to 27.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka have already announced their squad for the series opener against India with Dhananjaya de Silva leading the 15-member. Kamindu Mendis will be his deputy in the two-match outing.
