Gautam Gambhir finally reacted to Kuldeep Yadav's underwhelming performance ahead of Colombo Test

Kuldeep Yadav could pick only one wicket in the series opener against Sri Lanka

Following a dominant 165-run triumph over Sri Lanka in Galle to reopen their World Test Championship campaign, India turns its focus to the series finale in Colombo with one notable question mark lingering over the squad.

Don't be desperate for wickets: Gambhir to Kuldeep

While finger-spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Manav Suthar ruthlessly dismantled the opposition line-up, left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav struggled for rhythm, capturing a solitary wicket across 25 underwhelming overs. Addressing the quiet outing, head coach Gautam Gambhir publicly threw his weight behind the spinner, advising him to focus purely on executing his finest delivery rather than hunting obsessively for breakthroughs.

"Bowl your best spell, don't be desperate for wickets," Gambhir said at the pre-match press conference.

While India will enter the final match brimming with confidence from their clinical performance, Gambhir kept his tactical options open regarding potential changes to the winning side. He emphasized that team selection for Colombo will hinge strictly on strategic conditions rather than loyalty to the previous XI, stressing that the management's sole priority is deploying a combination fully equipped to claim all 20 opposition wickets.

"We will try to field the best bowling attack that can get us 20 wickets," he further added.

Shubman Gill’s on-field decision-making directly dictated the bowling rotations in Galle, according to Gautam Gambhir. Because finger-spinners Manav Suthar and Ravindra Jadeja consistently struck early, Kuldeep Yadav found himself largely underutilized. When the wrist-spinner finally got a run, the lack of extended spells hampered his ability to lock down consistent lines and lengths, leaving him short of his usual lethal edge.

Kuldeep Yadav vs Saransh Jain

As the team prepares for the series-deciding second Test in Colombo, the selection panel faces a classic tactical dilemma. They must decide whether to trust Kuldeep's deep international pedigree to rebound, or hand an opportunity to Indore off-spinner Saransh Jain, a proven domestic performer boasting 188 First-Class scalps for Madhya Pradesh. Regardless of who gets the nod, Kuldeep's proven track record still makes a strong case for his retention in the starting XI.

But the practice sessions in the past two days certainly hints at something. Kuldeep did turn out on both the nets sessions but didn't bowl a single ball. On the other hand, Saransh was spotted toiling hard in the nets. Whatever it is, the suspense will for sure end on the match when Gill will announce India's playing XI on August 23.
