Gautam Gambhir's first reaction after India's series win over Sri Lanka, says 'Test cricket needs...'

Following the conclusion of the Colombo Test on Thursday, August 27, India head coach Gautam Gambhir took to social media to commend his squad's character, patience and mental toughness. Despite the team's relentless effort across five high-intensity days, Sri Lanka’s trouble-shooter Sonal Dinusha, stood firm with a series of pivotal left-handed performances that repeatedly thwarted India’s bowling attack and pushed the match into a draw. Gambhir was quick to recognize the opponent's remarkable individual campaign, acknowledging how crucial Dinusha was in salvaging the contest for the hosts.

While the stalemate prevented India from sweeping all 12 valuable World Test Championship points from the fixture at the Sinhalese Sports Club, the visitors still sealed the two-match series 1-0. That triumph was anchored by their earlier victory at the Galle International Stadium during the opening Test, held from August 15 to 19, 2026. The dropped points, however, remain a missed opportunity to significantly bolster India’s position in the overall WTC standings.

India surrender before Sonal Dinusha's tenacity

An extraordinary individual effort from Dinusha proved to be the ultimate barrier between India and a victory in the Colombo Test. After India enforced the follow-on by dismissing Sri Lanka for 290 in their first attempt, the hosts were in deep trouble on Day 5, starting at 229 for 6 in their second innings. However, Dinusha forged a critical 111-run seventh-wicket stand alongside Keshara Nuwantha to steer the match away from danger. By Tea on the final day, Sri Lanka had posted 383/8 to establish a 170-run lead, prompting a handshaking draw shortly thereafter.

That second-innings century capped off a magnificent, record-breaking series for the left-handed all-rounder, who amassed 420 runs across just four visits to the crease. Having registered scores of 100 and 84 during the first Test at Galle, Dinusha backed it up with twin centuries (103 and a Day 5 ton) at the Sinhalese Sports Club. In doing so, he etched his name in the history books as the first Sri Lankan batting at No. 6 or lower to smash two hundreds in a single Test against India.

Dinusha's sensational run placed him alongside some of the finest players to ever grace the game. He became only the third Sri Lankan to notch three centuries in a two-match series, while also joining icons Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, and Angelo Mathews as the only players from his nation to score hundreds in back-to-back Tests against India. Furthermore, by passing the 80-run mark in each of his first three Test innings against Indian bowling, he matched a rare feat previously achieved only by West Indies legend Everton Weekes and Pakistan’s Zaheer Abbas, who last accomplished the mark 48 years ago.
