Sonal slams 3rd Test ton in 4 innings vs India, enters ex-SL captain, Amla's elite list

Sri Lanka's middle-order batter Sonal Dinusha has continued his milestone-achieving spree against India. Dinusha completed his third Test century in the series, becoming third batter to score three Test tons in a two-Test series against India. Dinusha completed his century in the third session of Day 5 while following-on.

Dinusha is eighth batter to score three centuries in a two-Test series. He is third Sri Lankan batter to achieve the feat and third against India as well.

List of batters with 3 Test tons in two-Test series

The first to achieve it was former Sri Lanka captain Aravinda de Silva with three centuries in two-Test series against Pakistan and India in 1997. South Africa's Jacques Kallis did it against Pakistan in 2007. Then, Proteas batter Hashim Amla did it against India in 2010.

Kumar Sangakkara became Sri Lanka's second to do score three Test tons in a two-Test series. He did it against Bangladesh. A year later, Pakistan's Younis Khan became the first to do it against a non-Asian team, Australia. 

In the current decade, Australia's Marnus Labuschagne joined the list with three Test tons in series against West Indies in 2022. The previous batter before Dinusha was New Zealand's Kane Williamson against South Africa in home series in 2024.

Dinusha’s another rare feat

Dinusha is also the first Sri Lankan batter in 21st century to score a century in both innings of a Test against India. Before Aravinda de Silva in 1997, Duleep Mendis was the first to do it with twin scores of 105 in Chennai in 1982.

Dinusha in Bradman's list 

Dinusha became the sixth no.6 batter to score a Test ton against India in third innings. The first was Australia's Don Bradman with 127 not out in January 1948. In December of same year, West Indies' Clyde Walcott scored 108. Nearly 41 years later, Pakistan's Saleem Malik scored 102 not out against India in 1989. 

In the 21st century, Sri Lanka's Dinesh Chandimal scored 162 not out in 2015. Nearly a year later, West Indies' Roston Chase scored 137 not out achieved the feat.
