Devdutt Padikal’s maiden Test century could solve India's number 3 puzzle

Devdutt Padikkal cracked his first Test century during the opening match against Sri Lanka. Coming in at the crucial no. 3 position due to an injury to the regular player, Padikkal seized the opportunity and delivered a standout performance. His century not only secured his place for the following Test but also ended a lengthy wait for India to have a consistent number 3 scorer in Tests. This performance has revived hopes that India might finally find stability in a position that has seen much experimentation over the last two years.

For nearly two years, India has struggled to find a reliable batsman at number 3 in Test cricket. Shubman Gill previously held the position, scoring three centuries in 2024 alone, including notable performances against Bangladesh and England. Despite these successes, Gill’s average of 37.74 at number 3 was considered insufficient for the demanding role, which requires long innings and consistent run scoring. Gill's batting style seemed better suited for the number 4 position, especially after the retirement of Virat Kohli, who filled a vital role in the middle order for India for many years.

Since Kohli’s retirement, the number 3 spot has been in flux with around six or seven players tried without lasting success. The role demands a batsman who can accumulate runs steadily, withstand pressure, and build innings that form the backbone of the team’s total. While some players have shown glimpses of potential, inconsistency has plagued their stay at this position. Padikkal’s recent century brings fresh optimism as he has consistently excelled in domestic cricket’s middle order and is now translating that form onto the international stage.
