Jurel made his India debut in the third test against England in Rajkot.

Team India defeated England in the home test series by the margin of 4-1. This Test series win was special because the key players were absent from the series. Virat Kohli was not available due to the birth of his second child and fast bowler Mohammed Shami was out because of his knee injury. Moreover, it was important for the team management to manage the workload of their premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah. KL Rahul managed to play only the first test and Shreyas Iyer played the first two tests and then was out of the squad due to his form.

Youngsters Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel, Devdutt Padikkal, Akashdeep Singh, and Rajat Patidar made their debuts in the test series. Dhruv Jurel was added to the team due to his batting as KS Bharat’s contribution with the bat was not promising. Jurel didn’t have much first-class experience.

"Dhruv Jurel can be that person definitely. The way he has batted this year and the way he batted in the IPL last IPL, he can definitely get a promotion up the order," Gavaskar told Star Sports.

"Of course, he has batted well, but his keeping, his work behind the stumps has been equally brilliant. Just by looking at his game awareness, I want to say that he is another MS Dhoni in the making. I know there can never be another MSD but you know the presence of mind that he has, MSD also when he started, it was that. And Jurel has that game awareness. Street-smart cricketer," Gavaskar had opined.
