Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) seasoned pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar set a milestone in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 by surpassing Sri Lankan legend Lasith Malinga to become the sixth-highest wicket-taker in IPL history. Bhuvneshwar achieved this milestone in a match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Hyderabad, where he claimed a wicket and conceded only 28 runs in his allocated four overs. SRH secured the victory by 6 wickets.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar began his IPL career in 2011 with Pune Warriors India (PWI). SRH acquired him for Rs 4.25 crore. Since donning the orange jersey, he has been a consistent performer for the franchise. In 2016, Bhuvneshwar played a significant role in SRH’s victorious campaign, winning the purple cap in both 2016 and 2017 as the leading wicket-taker. Throughout his tenure in the cash-rich league, he has taken 171 wickets in 164 matches with an impressive economy rate of 7.46. His best bowling figures are 5/19.

Bhuvneshwar leaves legendary Malinga behind

Meanwhile, Lasith Malinga, renowned for his yorkers and death bowling, has claimed 170 wickets in 122 matches with an economy rate of 7.14. Malinga made his IPL debut in 2009 for the Mumbai Indians, becoming a key player for the franchise. Following his retirement, he served as the bowling coach for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in 2022, and in 2023, he joined MI in a similar capacity.

Yuzvendra Chahal tops the list

At the top of the wicket-takers list in the IPL stands Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, with 193 wickets from 148 matches. Chahal debuted in the IPL with MI in 2013 and then played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) from 2014 to 2021. Not retained in the auction, RR signed him in the mega auction ahead of the 2022 season. Chahal has consistently performed well in the IPL, boasting his best bowling figures of 5/40.

Following Chahal is former West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, a key player for the CSK franchise. Bravo has taken 183 wickets in 161 matches, known for his expertise in the death overs with an economy rate of 8.38. He joined CSK as their bowling coach in 2022.
