Mayank Yadav has played only two matches in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) so far but is already making a name for himself in world cricket. The 21-year-old pacer from Delhi is receiving praise in India, and now, his reputation is growing internationally. New Zealand Test captain and veteran fast bowler, Tim Southee is highly impressed with Yadav's pace and is eagerly looking forward to following his progress.
Mayank Yadav takes IPL 2024 by storm
Yadav made his IPL debut for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) against Punjab Kings (PBKS), taking 3 wickets for just 27 runs in his allotted overs. He caught the spotlight when he bowled the season's fastest delivery at 156.7 kph against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, claiming three crucial wickets. Yadav has become the first player in IPL history to be awarded the Player of the Match in his first two matches.
Tim Southee praised Yadav's control over his pace. He mentioned that he has watched videos of Yadav's bowling and is keen to see his progress.
"I think the thing that is very pleasing that comes with his pace is his control. A lot of guys that have the out-and-out raw pace don’t always have the control. He looks to have control as well as pace. I think we have seen in a couple of games he has played, he has had a big impact. I am looking forward to following his progress through not only the rest of this IPL but further on as well," Southee told Sportstar.
India a 'tough' country to tour: Southee
Later this year, New Zealand is scheduled to tour India for three Test matches as part of the ICC World Test Championship. Last year, Kane Williamson stepped down from Test captaincy to manage his workload better. New Zealand Cricket appointed senior fast bowler Tim Southee as the 31st Test captain. He led New Zealand in two Tests against Pakistan and in a series against Australia, which Australia won 2-0.
Tim Southee commented on the upcoming tour of India, acknowledging that it is a challenging place with tough conditions for visiting teams. He sees it as a significant opportunity to perform well against India, which is at the top of the WTC points table.
"We know it is a tough place to go and play, and India is so strong at home. The conditions can be challenging, but it is a place that we are looking forward to going to. I guess it is a massive opportunity to do well in such a tough place for Test cricket," Southee said.
