Delhi Capitals (DC) secured their first victory of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season against the defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 20 runs. It was a collective team effort that led DC to their first win. In this match, Prithvi Shaw made a terrific comeback, scoring 43 off 27 balls, including two sixes and four fours, after being left out of the first two matches. He formed a 93-run partnership with David Warner, which helped them post 191 on the board.
Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag shared his thoughts on Shaw's knock. He mentioned that this knock was very important for the player, especially after being benched for a few matches.
"Team management will always look at whether a player is in rhythm or not in the nets when they're batting. This innings will remind Prithvi how important an innings like this was for him. Last IPL also he was sitting out for some games, and this IPL too he was benched for the first two games. Maybe he was hurting from within. That's where this innings probably came from," Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.
In the last season, Shaw played only 8 matches and scored 106 runs, including a fifty. Prithvi Shaw is known as an aggressive opening batter in the Indian circuit. However, controversies outside the cricket ground and his lack of fitness have limited his opportunities in the national team and affected his form.
Prithvi Shaw's career
Prithvi Shaw made his national debut in 2018, but his career has been full of ups and downs. In 2020, he received an 8-month ban after failing a doping test. His last appearance in a Test match was in December 2020 against Australia, and after the first test, he was dropped. Since then, the selectors have overlooked him for selection in the tests. Shaw last played for India in July 2021.
Nevertheless, he has been making his presence felt in the domestic circuit; he scored 87 runs in the semi-finals and 46 in the first innings of the Ranji Trophy 2024 finals. Mumbai won the record 42nd Ranji Trophy title. Last year, in 2023, he smashed 379 against Assam.
