Gujarat Titans (GT) started off brightly in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season with a win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) but were hit with an injury after former New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson took a nasty fall on the boundary. It was his Gujarat Titans (GT) debut, and Williamson was taken off the field after he landed awkwardly in an attempt to save a boundary during the opener at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad on March 31.

He did not take the field and was replaced by Sai Sudharsan in the batting line-up, the second impact player of the tournament after Tushar Deshpande.

After the match, GT skipper Hardik Pandya shared an update on the veteran batter's injury, and said, "I just messaged him. I don’t know about the update, I just messaged him. He has gone for the scans. So, once he comes back after the scans and the doctors check then only will be able to know what exactly it is. Right now there is no time frame and what exactly has happened. It is the knee for sure but I don’t know how serious it is and how much time he will take."

The incident took place in the 13th over of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) innings. IPL debutant and Irish pacer Joshua Little bowled a slower-length ball. CSK opener Ruturaj Gaikwad flicked it towards the mid-wicket boundary where Williamson was standing.

Williamson jumped in the air and caught the ball. As he was bound to go over the boundary, he flicked it back into the field before touching the boundary ropes. Williamson landed on his right knee and immediately collapsed on the ground clutching his knee and got medical attention as the GT physios rushed to their overseas recruit’s aid.

The 32-year-old managed to save two runs for his side but he could not take the field during CSK’s innings. The physios helped him get to the dugout.

In his stead, Sai Sudharsan was impressive with the bat, with the Tamil Nadu batter scoring 22 runs from 17 balls including three fours. He shared a crucial 53-run partnership with Shubman Gill for the second wicket from 34 deliveries in the run chase.
