Mumbai Indians (MI) registered a thrilling six-wicket victory over the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in what was the 1000th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, April 30.

However, the match was marked by controversy after eagle-eyed fans pointed out on Twitter that MI skipper Rohit Sharma's dismissal in the second over of the innings should not have counted. Sharma, who was celebrating his 36th birthday as well, was deemed to have been dismissed by Sandeep Sharma after being deceived by a knuckleball that hit the top of the off-stump, but the bails did not fall off.

However, moments later, when RR captain Sanju Samson collected the ball after it hit the stumps, the bails were dislodged by the faintest touch of his gloves.

Despite the controversy, MI kept their cool while chasing a mammoth 213 with Ishan Kishan and Cameron Green taking charge in the powerplay. Then came Suryakumar Yadav's knock of 55 runs which turned the game on its head for MI before Tim David produced a stunning 14-ball 45 to take the home team past the finish line with three balls to spare.

The victory lifted MI to the sixth spot on the IPL 2023 points table with their fourth win in eight matches, while the Royals retained their spot in the top four of the IPL 2023 points table despite losing their fourth match of the season.

Rajasthan Royals skipper Samson was also happy with his own team's fight, "The way we have been playing either we have won or we have come close. Results do come here and there. We will keep focusing on the process. We will keep focus on the controllable. We will keep fighting hard."

He also praised latest IPL centurion Yashasvi Jaiswal for his performance this season. "I was expecting something special from Jaiswal. He scored 70-odd in the last game; we always thought it (hundred) is round the corner," he said.
