The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season has been an exhibition of excitement, close finishes, moments of class and fiery encounters among many things. With 28 matches of the mega event under the shed, the points table is finally taking a little shape as the teams begin consolidating their place on the standings.
It was an important Thursday night for the Delhi Capitals (DC), who secured a much-needed first win of the competition after beating the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on their home turf. It was their first win after five matches, getting them off the points board while the two-time champions KKR suffered their third straight defeat on the trot.
Here, we take a closer look at the points table and how the teams have fared after 20 days of action.
1. Rajasthan Royals: Sanju Samson's side is sitting pretty at the top of the points table with four wins and two defeats in six matches played thus far. The Royals have earned eight points with a Net Run Rate (NRR) of 1.043.
2. Lucknow Super Giants: KL Rahul's men began their season on the right note as they trounced Delhi Capitals but lost their second game against the Super Kings. They won two consecutive matches from thereon before facing a defeat against Punjab Kings. LSG are back on track as they won their game against RR. The Super Giants have eight points in six matches with an NRR of 0.709.
3. Chennai Super Kings: The Men in Yellow jumped to third place in the standings after making it three wins in five matches played. They have an NRR of 0.265.
4. Gujarat Titans: The defending champions registered back-to-back wins to begin their season but lost to KKR. They bounced back with another close-fought game but lost again on Sunday. They are currently in fourth place with 6 points and an NRR of 0.192.
5. Royal Challengers Bangalore: After winning their opening game of the season, the Red Army lost back-to-back matches. The franchise came back strongly to win their fourth match of the season but once again suffered a loss. However, another win in Mohali for the Punjab Kings has taken them to six points with an NRR of -0.068, Bangalore are currently fifth in the standings.
6. Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma's men started their campaign with successive defeats but have now won three consecutive matches. They have an NRR of -0.164 with six points in four matches.
7. Punjab Kings: Shikhar Dhawan's side dropped to seventh place on the points table with three wins in six matches played after their loss to RCB. They now have six points with an NRR of -0.298.
8. Kolkata Knight Riders: In six matches played, KKR have now lost three matches in a row and have four points courtesy of two wins. They slipped to the eighth spot after losing to DC and have an NRR of 0.214.
9. Sunrisers Hyderabad: The Orange Army is ninth in the standings. They have four points with an NRR of -0.798 in five matches played.
10. Delhi Capitals: David Warner's team is at the bottom of the points table but are back on track with a win after five straight losses. They have an NRR of -1.183.
