Former India opener Virender Sehwag has warned the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni that he is at risk of being banned because of the multiple slow over-rate offences after their match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Monday, April 17.

Despite scoring mammoth totals in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), the bowling department of CSK have let the franchise down this season. Their match against RCB was once again a last-over thriller as the men in yellow held their nerves to secure an eight-run victory.

Sehwag feels that if it continues the way it is then the 41-year-old skipper might face a suspension due to repeated slow over-rate offences. "Dhoni was not looking happy because he has mentioned before that he wants the bowlers to reduce the number of no-balls and wides. CSK had bowled two three overs of extra and against RCB, they bowled another extra over.

It shouldn't go to a stage where Dhoni gets banned and CSK have to take the field without their captain. With the kind of knee injury he has, it appears he might play only a handful of matches more anyway. He is constantly pushing himself but if his bowlers are bowling so many wides and no-balls, then Dhoni will have to take rest," Sehwag said.

Injury issues to Deepak Chahar, Mukesh Choudhary, Sisanda Magala, Ben Stokes and Simarjeet Singh have left CSK pace bowling options with limited resources as their main concern for this year's cash-rich league has been discipline and accuracy.

Tushar Deshpande has given the most number of extras in IPL 2023, adding three more wides against RCB. The 2011 World Cup winning opener was also displeased with spinner Maheesh Theekshana. "It is especially disheartening to see the spinners bowl wides. These are things under your control," he added.

CSK will now face an improving ninth-placed Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on April 21.
