Mumbai Indians (MI) bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah single-handedly changed the face match with his ruthless spell in the slog overs. Bumrah’s herculean effort helped MI come back into the game as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) went from 136/3 to 165/9.

Records galore

Bumrah's 10/5 is the second-best bowling figures by a MI bowler after Alzarri Joseph, who took 6/12 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 2019 edition. Overall, Bumrah is now fifth on the list of best bowling figures in IPL history. Also, it is the most economical fifer in the league's history after Anil Kumble's 5/5 against Rajasthan Royals in 2009.

The 28-year-old bowled just one over in the powerplay overs and conceded five runs. Rohit Sharma took him off the attack and then brought him back just before the slot overs when KKR were looking like they will post a total above 200 in the must-win clash. However, Bumrah removed dangerous Andre Russell and set batter Nitish Rana in the 15th over.

Bumrah causes monumental collapse

Then, he took on the MI lower-order and sent back three batters to the dugout in the 18th over. Wicketkeeper-batter Sheldon Jackson became Bumrah's first victim in the 18th over. He did not let Pat Cummins repeat what he did in the previous game and got him out for a two-ball duck. Pinch-hitter Sunil Narine did not stand a chance either against a rampant Bumrah as he got out for a first-ball duck. Tim Southee managed to negotiate the hat-trick ball successfully.

In the last over, Rinku Singh prevented Bumrah from breaking Joseph’s three-year-old record. However, he could score just one run as Bumrah bowled five dot deliveries on the trot.

Enters elite list

Bumrah became the fifth bowler to take a triple-wicket maiden after Lasith Malinga (2015), Jaydev Unadkat (2017), Samuel Badree (2017), Umran Malik (2022).

Best of the season

Bumrah’s 5/10 is also the best bowling figures of the season. Wanindu Hasaranga, Umran Malik and Yuzvendra Chahal have taken fifers in the season so far.
