In a thrilling high-scoring encounter at Wankhede Stadium, left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh turned out to be the difference between the two teams as Punjab Kings (PBKS) beat Mumbai Indians by 13 runs. Cameron Green, Suryakumar Yadav's half-centuries went in vain as Sam Curran-led PBKS' sensational slog overs hitting helped them post a mammoth total on the board.
Captain leads the charge
MI's run chase did not get off to an ideal start. Arshdeep Singh got rid of Ishan Kishan in his first over itself. Cameron Green and Rohit Sharma made powerplay overs count as MI had 54/1 on the board before fielding restrictions were lifted. In the ninth over, Rohit hit the 250th maximum of his IPL career. Sam Curran then introduced Liam Livingstone into the attack. Livingstone got the wicket of Rohit in his first over. The opener scored 44 runs from 27 balls including four fours and three sixes.
Surya shows true colours
Suryakumar took on Livingstone with three consecutive fours. He reached his 40s in now time. Meanwhile, Green got to his half-century with a six off Green in the 15th over. Chahar went for 17 runs in the over. MI needed 65 runs from last five overs. In the 16th over, Green hit Nathan Ellis for a six and a four. Ellis had the last laugh. Green got out in the 16th over. He scored 67 runs from 43 deliveries including six fours and three sixes.
Arshdeep finishes on a high
In the 17th over, Suryakumar reached his half-century from just 23 deliveries, his fastest in IPL. In the 18th over, Arshdeep got the big wicket of Suryakumar who was caught at mid-wicket by Atharva Taide. He scored 57 runs from 26 deliveries including seven fours and three sixes. In the last two overs, MI needed 31 runs. In the penultimate over, David hit Ellis for a monster 114-metre six. But Ellis made a comeback and conceded seven runs from rest of the over. In the last over, Arshdeep was defending 16 runs. David took a single first ball and then Tilak Varma played a dot ball. Varma got bowled trying to slog. Arshdeep followed it up with the wicket of Nehal Wadhera. On both deliveries, he broke the middle stump. Jofra Archer managed just a single off the last two deliveries as PBKS won the match by 13 runs.
Top-order fires
Earlier, Rohit won the toss and opted to field first. Matthew Short opened the innings but his stay at the crease was short-lived. He lost his wicket to Green in the third over. Short scored 11 runs from 10 balls. In the fourth over, Prabhsimran Singh hit Jason Behrendorff for two sixes. Atharva Taide showed what he can do as well. Taide hit fit-again Jofra Archer for a six in the fifth over. PBKS had 58/1 on the board after six overs.
Wickets fall in middle overs
In the seventh over, Arjun Tendulkar got Prabhsimran's wicket with a superb yorker. The opener scored 26 runs from 17 balls including one four and two sixes. Livingstone hit a 101-metre six but struggled during his stay at the crease. Piyush Chawla got Livingstone stumped iin the 10th over. The English batter scored just 10 runs from 12 balls. In the same over, Chawla got the wicket of Taide as well who scored 29 runs from 17 balls including three fours and one six. At halfway stage, PBKS were 83/4.
PBKS batters let loose
Boundaries stopped for a while. The ultimate acceleration came in the 16th over. Curran hit Tendulkar for a six and a four. Then Harpreet Singh Bhatia hit the left-arm pacer for two fours and two sixes. Tendulkar conceded 31 runs from his third over. Archer took a beating too conceding 13 runs in the over. Curran took on Green and hit him for two sixes. Harpreet's knock came to an end in the 18th over. He scored 41 runs from 28 balls including four fours and two sixes. Jitesh Sharma walked out to bat and smacked Green for two consecutive sixes.
In the penultimate over, Curran hit Archer for two fours. He got to his half-century from 26 balls. He lost his wicket off Archer's last ball. He scored 55 runs from 29 balls including five fours and four sixes. In the final over, Jitesh smashed Behrendorff for two sixes in first three balls. The Aussie pacer came round the wicket and got the wicket of wicketkeeper-batter. He scored 25 runs from seven balls including four sixes. Harpreet Brar hit a four next ball and then got run out off the last ball as PBKS posted 214/8.
