Rajasthan Royals (RR) all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has made headlines for running out batters for backing up too far. In the clash between Royals and Punjab Kings (PBKS), Ashwin warned Dhawan for leaving the crease before the ball was bowled.
The incident took place in the seventh over of PBKS' innings. Ashwin pulled out of his action but did not take the bails off as Dhawan was slightly outside the crease before the ball was bowled. The camera then quickly panned to Ashwin’s teammate Jos Buttler who he had dismissed in a similar fashion when he used to play for the Punjab-based franchise.
Buttler did not give any reaction as the crowd cheered. It is also possible that Buttler would have thought that Ashwin just pulled out of his action.
When Ashwin had run out Buttler in 2019, it prompted an angry response as the English wicketkeeper-batter walked back towards the dressing room.
"I just asked him if he really wishes to play the game that way. Whether he thought it was the right thing to do. And he obviously thought it was, in his opinion," Buttler had said.
In his first spell, Ashwin conceded 16 runs from two overs. In the middle overs, he bowled an economical over to set batter Dhawan and wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma. He was brought back into the attack by Sanju Samson in the 17th over. He got Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza bowled. He ended up conceding 24 runs from his quota of four overs.
PBKS skipper Dhawan went on to register his 50th fifty-plus score in IPL history. He reached the fifty-run mark with a boundary off Yuzvendra Chahal in the 14th over. He took 36 deiveries to get to the milestone.
Earlier, in the 11th over, Dhawan danced down the wicket and tried to hit Ashwin towards long-on. He did not get the desired elevation and ended up hitting Bhanuka Rajapaksa on his right arm. Rajapaksa got the medical attention from the physio but had to leave the field and did not take further part in the game.
