Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma became the third Indian batter to score 6,000 or more runs in Indian Premier League (IPL) history. Rohit completed 6,000 IPL runs in MI's fifth clash of the season. Rohit reached 6,000 runs with a boundary off Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) off-spinner Washington Sundar in the third over of the innings.
Rohit got off to a terrific start but could not convert it into a big score. He was deceived by the change of pace from T Natarajan. He tried to play the flick shot off the off-cutter from the left-arm pacer and ended up finding a leading edge which was caught by SRH skipper Aiden Markram at mid-off.
He scored 28 runs from 18 deliveries including six fours. He shared a 41-run opening partnership with in-form Ishan Kishan.
Before the game, Rohit needed just 14 runs to achieve the milestone. He has 6,014 runs from 227 innings at an average of 30.22 including one century and 41 half-centuries. For MI, he is the highest run-scorer with 5,117 runs from 192 innings at an average of 30.27 including one century and 34 half-centuries.
Currently, former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli is the leading run-scorer with 6,844 runs from 220 innings at an average of 36.59 including five centuries and 47 fifties. Kohli is followed by Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shikhar Dhawan who scored 6,477 runs from 209 innings at an average of 35.98 including two centuries and 49 half-centuries.
The only overseas batter to score 6,000 or more runs in IPL is Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper David Warner. The Aussie opener has scored 6,109 runs from 167 innings at an average of 42.13 including 4 centuries and 58 fifties.
In the previous game, Rohit did not captain as he had a stomach bug. In his absence, Suryakumar Yadav led MI at home against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). However, Rohit walked out as impact player in the run chase contributed with a cameo in powerplay overs. He scored 20 runs before losing his wicket to rookie spinner Syash Sharma.
