Arjun Tendulkar managed to defend 20 runs off the last over as Mumbai Indians (MI) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by five runs at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad. Cameron Green finally justified the hefty price tag while their two Australian pacers Jason Behrendorff and Riley Meredith took two wickets each to keep SRH at bay to register MI’s third win on the trot.
Poor start
In the run chase, SRH lost their explosive opener Harry Brook (9) early to Jason Behrendorff in the second over. Arjun Tendulkar started off well conceded 14 runs from his two overs. In his second over Behrendorff struck again to dismiss Rahul Tripathi (7). Mayank Agarwal held on to one end as SRH had 42/2 after powerplay overs. Markram hit a few boundaries but he lost his wicket to Green in the ninth over. The skipper scored 22 runs from 17 balls. In the next over, Piyush Chawla continued his good run and got Abhishek Sharma out for a single-digit score. At halfway stage, SRH were 76/4.
Agarwal, Klaasen keep run chase alive
Agarwal and Heinrich Klaasen kept SRH in hunt. Klaasen took on Chawla in the 14th over hitting him for two fours and as many sixes. But Chawla had the last laugh as he outsmarted the South African batter with a googly. He contributed with a 16-ball 36 cameo including four fours and two sixes. In the next over, Agarwal missed out on his first half-century of the season. He took on Riley Meredith but got caught in the deep. The opener scored 48 runs from 41 balls including four fours and one six.
Too many wickets
Marco Jansen gave SRH hope with three fours within five deliveries. Meredith bowled a slower one and Jansen took the bait and was caught at long-on by Tim David. Jansen scored 13 runs from six balls. In the 18th over, Washington Sundar hit two boundaries and Behrendorff leaked five wides. But Sundar was caught napping while taking a single by David who pulled off a direct hit. Abdul Samad ended the over with a four and SRH needed 24 runs from last two overs.
Arjun’s maiden IPL wicket
Green bowled a brilliant penultimate over conceded just four runs. Arjun was given the opportunity to defend 20 runs. He started off with a dot ball to Samad. On the next delivery, Hrithik Shokeen's throw caught him short of the crease. Samad scored just nine runs from 12 balls. He followed it up with a wide. On the third ball, he conceded two runs. On the penultimate delivery, Bhuvneshwar went for a shot and got caught by Rohit inside the 30-yard circle. He became Arjun's maiden IPL wicket as SRH lost the match by 14 runs.
Rohit reaches milestone
MI got off to a flyer with skipper Rohit and Ishan Kishan firing from both ends. In the third over, Rohit hit Sundar for three consecutive fours and completed his 6,000 IPL runs. He became the fourth batter to do so in IPL. T Natarajan ended Rohit's knock. Rohit fell prey to Natarajan's slower ball. He scored 28 runs from 18 balls including six fours. After powerplay overs, MI were 53/1. Green took his time at start and played a few dot balls. He broke free with a six off Sundar in the ninth over. At halfway stage, MI were 80/1.
Jansen’s eventful day
In the 11th over, Jansen broke the partnership with Kishan's wicket. The wicketkeeper-batter scored 38 runs from 31 balls including three fours and two sixes. In the same over Suryakumar Yadav hit a six but was sent back to the pavillion, courtesy a stunner from skipper Markram. From the 15th over, MI accelerated. Once again, it was Jansen's over that changed the tide. Green hit him for two fours whereas Tilak Varma hit two sixes in a 21-run over.
Green’s maiden IPL fifty
Mayank Markande finished his quota of four overs with an expensive over as well. Bhuvneshwar got hit for a six but ended Varma's rampant knock. The southpaw scored 37 runs from 17 balls including two fours and four sixes. In the 18th over, Green targetted Natarajan and hit him for three fours and a six. He reached his maiden IPL fifty from 33 balls. It was followed by a sensational penultimate over by Bhuvneshwar who conceded just six runs. In the final over, David hit two fours off Natarajan. David got run out off the last ball after contributing with 11-ball 16. Green scored 64 off 40 balls to take MI to 192/5. His knock was studded with six fours and two sixes.
