Mahendra Singh Dhoni has managed to keep everyone in dark about whether he will retire or continued to play Indian Premier League (IPL) this season. While the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper has hinted about retirement a couple of times as fans have flocked to stadiums to catch one glimpse of him, he gave room for speculations with his comments at toss before Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) clash. Now, Dhoni's former CSK teammate Suresh Raina has spilled the beans that it may not be his farewell season.
“Main trophy jeetke ek saal aur khelunga (After winning the trophy, I will play one more year),” Raina revealed on Jio Cinema what Dhoni told him in his recent meeting with Dhoni during ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season.
Dhoni-led CSK are currently placed second on the points table with six wins from 11 games. The 41-year-old has scored 76 runs so far at a strike rate of 200. He has hit two fours and eight sixes.
Last week, former New Zealand cricketer-turned-commentator Morrison asked how he is liking the support from fans in his farewell season. “This wonderful swansong tour, your last, how are you enjoying it?” to which Dhoni responded with a smile saying, “Well, you have decided it’s my last.”
The crowd at Ekana Cricket Stadium went berserk as soon as Dhoni said it. “You hear that, he is going to come back again next year,” Morrison said as the crowd continued to cheer former India captain.
Earlier, Dhoni had partially confirmed that this will be his last season. While thanking the crowd at Eden Gardens, he had said, "I will just say thanks for the support, they came in big numbers. Most of these guys will come in a KKR jersey next time. They are trying to give me a farewell, so thanks a lot to the crowd."
Dhoni had another statement after beating Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). “Whatever said and done, last phase of my career, important to enjoy it. It feels good to be here. They have given a lot of love and affection. They always stay late to listen to me,” the four-time IPL winning captain had said.
