Sehwag advised Gill to seize the opportunity and score big runs in IPL to secure his spot in main squad.

Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) Ruturaj Gaikwad and Gujarat Titans' (GT) Shubman Gill are leading their respective teams for the first time in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Shubman Gill failed to make a cut in India's 15-member T20 World Cup 2024 squad. However, the Gujarat Titans’ skipper has been named in the reserves list along with Rinku Singh, Avesh Khan, and Khaleel Ahmed in India's T20 World Cup squad.

KL Rahul and Ruturaj Gaikwad are not even in that: Virender Sehwag

While speaking on Cricbuzz, Virender Sehwag said that Gill should be motivated with his name in the T20 World Cup reserves list. Even KL Rahul and Ruturaj Gaikwad dropped from India's T20 World Cup squad. He also advised Gill to score runs at a good strike rate and seize opportunity.

"I think he's lucky that his name is in the T20 World Cup reserves. KL Rahul and Ruturaj Gaikwad are not even in that. That's a good point and he should be motivated by that. Next time, he should not let his place go once he gets a chance. He should focus on scoring runs at a good strike rate so he doesn't get replaced," Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

Sehwag shares piece of advice for Shubman Gill

Sehwag also recalled his days by saying that Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, and VVS Laxman never gave a reason to get dropped. He also advised Gill to improve his skills and score big runs to secure his spot in the team.

“In my days, we had Ganguly, Tendulkar, Dravid, Laxman. It doesn't matter how many runs the other guys scored, these guys didn't go out because they never stopped scoring runs. How will you drop them if they keep scoring runs? They never gave a reason to get dropped. This is what Shubman Gill has to learn. Once he returns to Indian team and plays regularly post the World Cup, he shouldn't let such an opportunity arise again. Improve your skills and score big, because big scores will eventually save you,” Sehwag added.

In the ongoing IPL 2024, Gill has been going through a modest show with the bat. He has so far scored 332 runs in 11 matches at a strike rate of 137.61 with an average of 32.20 including two half-centuries. The 24-year-old last scored his half-century against the Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan Royals (RR) on April 10. He will be in action when GT are set to cross swords with CSK at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 10. Currently, GT stand at the ninth position in the IPL 2024's points table.
