Dawid Malan: A reassuring presence

While Stokes grabbed headlines, Dawid Malan ensured he wasn't overshadowed. Dispelling doubts surrounding his form, Malan's polished 96-run innings as an opener exuded confidence. Forming a formidable partnership, Malan and Stokes added 199 runs, rescuing England from an early wobble at 13/2. Although Malan's style contrasted with Stokes' raw power – evident from his strike rate of 146.77 – he exuded control and stability, especially considering his rush back to the team post the birth of his second child.

After a slow start, Stokes' prowess was evident as the innings progressed. He raced from fifty to a century in just 32 balls and needed only 30 more to touch 150. Stokes’ versatility was in full display, effortlessly dispatching Lockie Ferguson's fiery-paced deliveries to the boundary. His audacity peaked when he cheekily guided a short ball over his shoulder, just inches away from a boundary.

New Zealand's strategy to slow the pace backfired dramatically. Stokes pummelled Rachin Ravindra, scoring three sixes in two overs. However, once Malan was dismissed controversially, the Kiwis managed to dent England's lineup, finishing their innings 11 balls early.

Kiwi's pursuit falters

Trent Boult showed glimpses of a fightback, bagging five wickets, even though some of his spells were erratic. Stokes’ remarkable innings concluded in the 45th over, but by then he had already surpassed Roy’s record.
