Kohli's robust show in Vijay Hazare Trophy

Currently enjoying a short break with his family, Kohli is recharging before a busy schedule that includes the conclusion of the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the upcoming home series against New Zealand.

The new year also brings Kohli to the doorstep of a monumental cricketing milestone, as he sits just 25 runs away from reaching 28,000 runs in international cricket. Should he achieve this during the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand starting January 11, he will become only the third player in history to reach the feat, joining the elite company of Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara.

While the achievement itself is rare, it is Kohli’s efficiency that stands out; he has amassed his current total of 27,975 runs in only 623 innings. In comparison, Tendulkar reached the 28,000-run mark in 644 innings, while Sangakkara required 666. With a 21-inning cushion over the current record holder, it is widely anticipated that Kohli will comfortably become the fastest player to hit this landmark during the matches in January.

Virat Kohli sets sights on New Zealand ODIs

Kohli showcased exceptional form in his initial outings for Delhi during the Vijay Hazare Trophy, delivering standout performances with scores of 131 and 77. These dominant knocks have provided him with significant momentum heading into the new international season, reassuring fans that his appetite for big runs remains as sharp as ever.

During this prolific run, Kohli shattered another big record by becoming the fastest player to reach 16,000 runs in List A cricket. He achieved this milestone in just his 330th innings, comfortably eclipsing the previous record held by the iconic Tendulkar, who took 391 innings to reach the same mark. This feat further cements Kohli's legacy as arguably the greatest one-day batter in the history of the sport. Looking ahead to the national team's schedule, a BCCI source has indicated that while the Indian ODI squad is set to assemble in Vadodara by January 8, Kohli may arrive a day earlier. The highly anticipated three-match ODI series against New Zealand is scheduled to kick off on January 11.
