Star batter David Warner concluded his Test cricket journey on a victorious note, as Australia clinched an eight-wicket triumph over Pakistan in the final Test on Saturday, January 6, at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground.
This victory marked Australia's 17th consecutive home win against Pakistan in Test matches. Pursuing a 130-run target, Australia effortlessly achieved their target in the second session of Day 4 at the SCG. Pakistan's glimmer of hope came when Sajid Khan dismissed Usman Khawaja lbw for a duck in the initial over of Australia's chase. However, Warner and Marnus Labuschagne ensured a smooth sail for the hosts with minimal disruptions.
Warner's final Test innings was marked by a fluid performance, reaching a half-century in 56 balls. He scored 57 runs from 75 balls before Khan claimed his wicket. Warner ended his Test career amassing 8,786 runs, averaging 44.59.
Labuschagne, too, was in fine form, reaching his fifty in 64 balls. Their partnership of 119 runs comfortably steered Australia across the finish line.
Hazlewood and Lyon Turn the Tide Against Pakistan
Just as Pakistan appeared to take the lead with a 14-run advantage in the first innings, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon stepped up for Australia. Hazlewood's four-wicket haul during the third session of Day 3 left Pakistan struggling at 68 for 7.
Mohammad Rizwan and Aamer Jamal managed to forge a 42-run stand for the eighth wicket, but their effort was short-lived. Lyon broke through their defense, dismissing Rizwan, who had made 28 from 57 deliveries, giving Australia an early breakthrough on the day.
Soon after, Pat Cummins overcame Jamal, who had been playing a resilient 18 from 47 balls. Lyon then finished off Hasan Ali, effectively ending Pakistan's innings.
Pakistan was all out for 115 in 43.1 overs, setting a modest target for Australia. Throughout the series, Pakistan had opportunities to dominate, but Australia's formidable strength in Tests, particularly on their home ground, was once again evident.
