ICC hands Pakistan legend Shahid Afridi key responsibility for upcoming T20 World Cup 2024

Shahid Afridi has been named the new ambassador for ICC T20 World Cup.

Afridi has joined other cricket greats like Chris Gayle and Yuvraj Singh, along with legendary sprinter Usain Bolt.

Former Pakistan captain and star all-rounder Shahid Afridi has been chosen to represent the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 as a tournament ambassador. He joins other cricket greats Chris Gayle and Yuvraj Singh, along with legendary sprinter Usain Bolt. Afridi actually won the Player of the Series award back in the very first T20 World Cup in 2007. Throughout his T20 World Cup career, Afridi was a force to be reckoned with. In his 34 matches, he scored over 500 runs with an average of nearly 19. He was also a bowling threat, taking 39 wickets, including two matches where he grabbed 4 wickets each. Afridi even bagged the Player of the Match award in the 2009 T20 World Cup final, where Pakistan emerged victorious against Sri Lanka at the historic Lord's Cricket Ground in London.

“The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is an event that is very close to my heart. From being Player of the Tournament in the inaugural edition to lifting the trophy in 2009, some of my favourite career highlights have come from competing on this stage,” Afridi said.


“T20 World Cups have gone from strength to strength in recent years, and I’m thrilled to be part of this edition, where we will see more teams, more matches and even more drama than ever before.”

Shahid Afridi is excited to watch the high-voltage match between India and Pakistan!  This epic encounter, which he calls a "marquee clash," is happening on Sunday, June 9th at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.


“I am particularly excited to witness the India v Pakistan fixture on 9 June. It is one of the great rivalries in sport and New York will be a fitting stage for this unmissable encounter between two great teams,” Afridi added.

 

Afridi's T20 World Cup track-record

Shahid Afridi was a two-way force across his 34 T20 World Cup matches. Not only did he amass 546 runs with a near 19 average, but he also picked up 39 wickets, including two impressive four-wicket hauls. His crowning achievement was being named Player of the Match in the 2009 T20 World Cup final, where Pakistan triumphed over Sri Lanka at the legendary Lord's Cricket Ground in London.
