Jammu and Kashmir scripted history on February 28 by clinching their first-ever Ranji Trophy title. While the final against powerhouse Karnataka technically ended in a draw, Jammu & Kashmir were declared champions by virtue of a massive first-innings lead. This historic victory, coming 67 years after the team first began competing in the tournament, earns them a revamped prize of Rs5 crore following the BCCI's 2023 reward increase.
How much prize money will J&K earn after historic Ranji Trophy triumph?
The foundation for this triumph was laid by a dominant batting performance in the first innings, where J&K piled on a staggering 584 runs. Their bowling attack, spearheaded by pacer Auqib Nabi, then dismantled Karnataka for 293 in 93.3 overs. Nabi’s brilliant haul of 5/54 ensured a commanding 291-run lead, effectively putting the championship trophy within reach before the final innings even began.
Rather than enforcing the follow-on, J&K opted to bat Karnataka out of the game entirely. On the fifth day, Qamran Iqbal and Sahil Lotra turned the match into a celebration of their dominance; Iqbal remained unbeaten on 160, while Lotra reached 101 not out. When J&K reached 342/4—stretching their total lead to an insurmountable 633 runs, both captains agreed to shake hands, officially ending the contest and crowning Jammu and Kashmir the new kings of Indian domestic cricket.
