India’s top-order batter Virat Kohli was seen having a serious discussion with one of the national selectors of Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee, Pragyan Ojha. The video of the conversation ahead of the second ODI of the three-ODI series against South Africa in Raipur has gone viral on social media.
Earlier, there were rumours that the selectors may ask Kohli to come out of retirement in the Test format considering India’s batting struggles at home in the current World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. However, the 37-year-old squashed those rumours in the post-match press conference as he was adjudged ‘Player of the match’ in ODI series opener at JSCA Stadium Complex, Ranchi for his 135-run knock.
“Yes, and that’s how it’s always going to be. I’m just playing one form of the game," Kohli told presenter Harsha Bhogle as he bagged his 44th ‘Player of the match’ award.
Also, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia dismissed the rumour. Saikia said no such conversation has taken place.
“What’s being said about Virat Kohli is just a rumour. There has been no conversation with Kohli about this. Do not give weight to rumours. Nothing of that sort has happened,” Saikia told AajTak.
Chain of events before Kohli’s Test retirement
Kohli had retired from Test cricket ahead of the ongoing WTC cycle. After a forgettable Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Kohli returned to domestic cricket after over a decade. He turned up for Delhi in his last red-ball game. During the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 and head of the Test squad announcement for Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025, Kohli announced his retirement from Tests.
Before the announcement, Kohli had trained with coach Sanjay Bangar against the red ball. Also, his childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma had said that Kohli wants to do well in England.
