Team India were handed a humiliating 408-run defeat in Guwahati by South Africa on Day 5 of the second Test. As South Africa registered their first Test series win on Indian soil in 25 years, it puts India’s final spot in jeopardy for the second consecutive time.
After the Guwahati drubbing, India slipped to fifth position on the points table, below arch-rivals Pakistan who drew a Test series at home against the Proteas.

Australia remain at top with four consecutive wins, including a dominating eight-wicket win in the Ashes 2025-26 opener at Perth Stadium. Their next Test is a pink-ball Test against the Ben Stokes-led side at The Gabba, Brisbane, starting on December 4.
India’s next Test in the current cycle, against Sri Lanka, is scheduled to start in August 2026. Till that time, there are bound to be plenty changes on the WTC points table.
Meanwhile, New Zealand will start their WTC campaign with a Test series at home against West Indies. The Roston Chase-led side is yet to open its account as they've suffered five consecutive defeats.
How many Test series India have left in WTC cycle?
India have three more Test series left in the current cycle. After the two-Test series in Sri Lanka, they will travel to New Zealand for a two-Test series in New Zealand. India's last Test series of the current cycle is against Australia, a five-Test series at home. India would look to regain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after losing 3-1 on Australian soil.
