Indian team under the leadership of Rohit Sharma will take on Sri Lanka in a three-match T20I series. The T20I series will start on February 24, in Lucknow. The remaining two matches will be played in Dharamshala on February 26 and February 27.
Defeat in last T20I series
Rohit Sharma’s men will be determined to keep the winning momentum alive as they won all the six matches (three ODIs and three T20Is) against West Indies in the recently-concluded series. In the last T20I series between India and Sri Lanka, the hosts had secured a 2-1 victory against Indian team. The last T20I series was played back in July, 2022.
Indian team had started that T20I series on a positive note after Shikhar Dhawan’s men had claimed a 38-run victory in the first match of the series, played in Colombo.
Batting first, the visitors had registered a formidable total of 164 runs losing 5 wickets. Skipper Dhawan (46 runs off 36 balls) and Suryakumar Yadav (50 runs off 34 deliveries) showed terrific batting skills to help their team in reaching a fightable total.
For Sri Lanka, their bowlers- Dushmantha Chameera and Wanindu Hasaranga picked up two wickets each.
In reply, Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar was on fire with the ball as he had picked up four wickets conceding just 22 runs. Apart from Bhuvneshwar, another Indian pacer Deepak Chahar bagged two wickets to bundle out the Sri Lanka team for a paltry total of 126 runs, in 18.3 overs.
Eventually, Bhuvneshwar was adjudged as the Man of the Match as well.
Sri Lanka batsman Charith Asalanka (44 runs off 26 balls) turned out to be the highest-scorer for his side but his efforts eventually proved to be futile.
In the second match of the T20I series, the hosts secured a much-needed comeback as they defeated Indian team by 4 wickets.
The thrilling affair saw, Sri Lanka reach the target with just 2 balls remaining. Batting first, Indian team scored 132 runs losing five wickets, in 20 overs. Indian skipper Shikhar Dhawan continued his good form but again he failed to reach his half century as he was sent back to the dressing room, scoring 40 runs off 42 balls.
In reply, Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batsman Minod Bhanuka (36 runs off 31 balls) and Dhananjaya de Silva (40 runs off 34 balls) displayed a good batting show to help their side in winning the second T20I of the series.
Dhananjaya was adjudged Man of the Match for his match-winning innings.
Hasaranga's superb show
In the final match of the T20I series, the hosts produced an amazing show to win the match by 7 wickets. Batting first, Indian team could only reach a mere total of 81 runs losing eight wickets in 20 overs.
Sri Lanka spinner Wanindu Hasaranga exhibited his superb bowling display and picked up four crucial wickets conceding just 9 runs in four overs.
In reply, the hosts reached the target in 14.3 overs, losing 3 wickets. Indian spinner Rahul Chahar did pick up three wickets conceding 15 runs in four overs but his efforts were not enough to thwart the Sri Lanka team from winning the T20I series.
Sri Lanka all-rounder Hasaranga was adjudged as the Man of the Series as he had claimed 7 wickets and scored 29 runs.
