Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) has brought in legendary pacer Zaheer Khan into their fold to fill in their mentor vacancy which was left open after their former mentor Gautam Gambhir returned to Kolkata Knight Riders after a two-year stint with them. He now has even left the KKR camp to become the Indian head coach. However, it is not confirmed yet whether Zaheer will also be playing the role of their bowling coach, a post that was left vacant after Morne Morkel parted ways with the franchise to join the Indian coaching staff.
Zaheer was part of the Mumbai Indians (MI) franchise from 2018 to 2022, first as director of cricket and then head of global development. He had previously played for MI, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League. Altogether, he has featured in 100 games across ten seasons, getting 102 wickets at an economy of 7.58. He retired from all forms of cricket in 2017 after he led the Daredevils in the tournament.
LSG's current coaching set-up
Currently, LSG's coaching staff is headed by Justin Langer. He would continue to play the role of the franchise's head coach. He replaced Andy Flower ahead of the IPL 2024 season. Lance Klusener and Adam Voges will continue to be his assistants. The franchise finished in playoffs in their first two seasons but failed to make it into the top four in the previous edition.
Zaheer's return to the IPL comes at a time when teams are getting ready for the upcoming mega auction. The IPL is likely to announce the retention rules by early September.
