The Bengal team for the forthcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2024–25 includes Mohammed Shami, a star fast bowler for India. Notably, Shami just returned to professional cricket during Bengal's match against Madhya Pradesh in the sixth round of the Ranji Trophy 2024–25. Following surgery for an Achilles tendon injury on his left leg in February of this year, the speedster returned to the cricket field nearly a year after his last appearance in the ODI World Cup 2023.

As he led Bengal to an exciting 11-run triumph, the right-arm speedster bowled 43.2 overs over two innings and claimed six wickets. Additionally, he helped his team reach their second-inning goal of 338 runs with a useful 37 off 36. According to numerous reports following his incredible return, Shami will be sent to Australia for the forthcoming five-match Test series, which starts on November 22.

The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) will evaluate the fast bowler's fitness in more detail during the competition, which starts on November 23. According to PTI, the national selection committee and the medical staff want Shami to play a few more games before flying to Australia to check on his health after playing a lot of games, even if they are white-ball contests.

Mohammed Kaif, Shami's younger brother, has also been included in the Bengal team for the T20 tournament, which also features Shahbaz Ahmed and Abhishek Porel, two IPL players. Sudip Gharamias will skipper the team as they play the reigning champions Punjab in Rajkot to start the season. Along with Hyderabad, Meghalaya, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Bihar, Rajasthan, and Punjab, Bengal has been assigned to Group A. The tournament's final will take place in Bengaluru on December 15.
