Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain Rajat Patidar was involved in a strange incident as his previous mobile number was assigned to a person from Chhattisgarh. What began as a seemingly routine telecom issue soon unfolded into a curious chain of events, ultimately prompting Indian batter to approach the police for assistance.
According to a report from NDTV, Patidar’s former mobile number had been inactive for over 90 days, leading his telecom provider to deactivate and subsequently reassign it to another person. The number was purchased by a boy named Manish, from the Gariaband district of Chhattisgarh, who activated it with a Reliance Jio SIM card in late June. Shortly after activation, Manish and his friend Khemraj noticed that the profile picture on their WhatsApp, is of Rajat Patidar.
Calls from Kohli and ABD!
Soon after, the phone started receiving calls from the legendary cricketers Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, who thought they were contacting Patidar. In the beginning of these strange events, both the boys found the situation funny, and thought it was a prank or some mistake.
Patidar urged but local boys thought it was a prank
When Patidar got to know about the situation in detail, he himself contacted Manish to claim his old number back, as all of his important contacts of players, coaches, teammates, and others were on that number. But, the young man jokingly replied that “And we’re MS Dhoni”, as they didn't believe that Patidar was on the other end of the call.
Frustrated with the situation, the 30-year-old reportedly cautioned the two young boys: “Okay, I’ll send the cop.” Within ten minutes, the local police arrived at Manish’s residence as the matter escalated.
What happened after police intervened?
And then, the police took the matter in their own hands. Upon learning that it wasn’t a prank, Manish and Khemraj co-operated with the police, and without any disagreement handed over the SIM.
Mistake leads to an experience of a liftetime
Reflecting on the event, Khemraj told the media about the experience as a dream come true.
“I got to speak to Kohli because of a wrong number. My life’s goal is complete,” he said.
Earlier this year, Patidar ended RCB’s 18-year title drought by leading the team to their first-ever Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy. Captaining RCB for the first time, Patidar played a vital role in guiding the franchise to a historic victory.
