West Indies fast-bowling legend Courtney Walsh has joined Zimbabwe’s support staff as their bowling consultant for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026, which will be hosted by India and Sri Lanka in February. Zimbabwe Cricket confirmed that Walsh has already started working with the team.

Courtney Walsh's previous stints

Walsh, who became the first bowler in history to take 500 Test wickets, brings vast coaching experience. In the past, he has worked as a specialist bowling coach with the Bangladesh men’s team and also served as head coach of the West Indies women’s side. Last year, he served as a technical consultant for Zimbabwe’s women’s setup.

Walah on his appointment

Speaking after his appointment, Walsh said he is encouraged by what he has seen so far. He believes the team has strong potential if they work together and adjust well to conditions. Walsh added that the variety and balance in Zimbabwe’s bowling attack stood out to him.

Zimbabwe's bowling unit

Sikandar Raza will lead Zimbabwe's bowling unit in the mega event. The pace attack includes Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava and Tinotenda Maposa, while Brad Evans and Tashinga Musekiwa provide support as seam-bowling all-rounders. The spin department features experienced names like Wellington Masakadza, Graeme Cremer and Raza himself.

Givemore Makoni on Walash's appointment

Zimbabwe Cricket managing director Givemore Makoni said Walsh was brought in to guide and mentor the bowlers as the team prepares for the global event. He added that Walsh’s experience and understanding of top-level cricket will play a key role in strengthening Zimbabwe’s bowling ahead of the tournament.

Zimbabwe have been placed in Group B for the T20 World Cup, alongside Australia, Ireland, Oman and co-hosts Sri Lanka. All of their group matches will be played in Sri Lanka, with games scheduled in Colombo and Pallekele. The team returns to the tournament after missing out on qualification for the 2024 edition.
