Sanju Samson once again got off to a fast start but could not turn it into a big score during India’s T20 World Cup 2026 match against the Zimbabwe national cricket team.
The wicketkeeper-batter looked confident from the first ball. He attacked the bowlers straight away and scored 24 runs from just 15 deliveries, striking at 160. His short knock included two sixes and a four. With his aggressive approach, Samson helped ease the pressure on Abhishek Sharma, who has been struggling for form in the tournament.
However, just like in earlier matches, Samson couldn’t carry on and make it count. In a previous game against the Namibia national cricket team, he had also started quickly but was dismissed for 22 off just 8 balls.
Irfan Pathan lauds Sanju Samson
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan, who is part of the commentary panel for the tournament, reacted soon after Samson’s dismissal. Sharing his thoughts on X, Pathan wrote that “Sanju Samson did his job,” suggesting that the opener played his role by providing a quick start.
Samson Abhishek added 48 runs
Samson and Abhishek put together 48 runs for the first wicket in only 3.4 overs, giving India strong early momentum. When Samson walked back to the dugout, the team management applauded his effort. The commentators also praised the intent he showed at the top of the order.
India featured with two changes in playing XI
Samson was included in the playing XI in place of Rinku Singh, who had been struggling, scoring just 24 runs across five innings. The team also made another change, leaving out Washington Sundar and bringing back Axar Patel.
