Ruturaj Gaikwad rewrote cricket record books in the ongoing Vijay Hazare 2022 second quarter-final against Maharashtra at Narendra modi Stadium B Ground, Ahmedabad. Gaikwad became the first batter in the world to hit seven sixes in an over in List A cricket.
In the penultimate over of the innings, Gaikwad went absolutely berserk hitting Shiva Singh for seven sixes in a row. The fifth delivery Shiva bowled was a no ball and was deposited over the boundaries as well. A total of 43 runs were scored in the 49th over which is a joint-record in List A cricket.
The original record was created in 2018 in New Zealand's The Ford Trophy. 43 runs were scored off Willem Ludick's over. Brett Hampton (23) and Joe Carter (18) combined to score 41 runs. Ludick bowled two no balls in the over which led to the world record.
Before the penultimate over, he had scored 165 runs. He got to his maiden List A century with a six as well. He remained unbeaten for 220 runs from 159 deliveries. His record-breaking knock was studded with 10 fours and 16 sixes. He helped Maharashtra post a gigantic total of 330/5 against Uttar Pradesh.
Gaikwad started off his innings in typical fashion, taking his time and playing himself in. He got to his half-century from 71 deliveries with a six off Shiva in the 26th over. Despite wickets falling at the other end, Gaikwad accelerated. He reached his century with a six off Shiva in the 38th over. In the 45th over, he got to his 150 with a single off Kartik Tyagi. For the next 70 runs, he took just 11 deliveries as 10 of those were sixes. With 16 sixes, Gaikwad equalled Rohit Sharma's record of most sixes by an Indian batter in an innings in List A cricket.
Gaikwad carried Maharashtra's innings on his back after Rahul Tripathi (9) and Satyajeet Bachhav (11) were dismissed cheaply. The next highest score for Maharashtra were scored by Ankit Bawne (54-ball 37) and Azim Kazi (42-ball 37). In the 60-run unbeaten partnership for the sixth wicket, wicketkeeper-batter Saurabh Navale scored just one run from five deliveries.
