India’s ODI vice-captain KL Rahul and all-rounder Axar Patel have been ruled out of the upcoming three-T20I series against West Indies. Rahul has sustained an upper left hamstring strain during fielding in the second ODI on February 9, 2022 whereas Patel has resumed the final stage of his rehabilitation after his recovery from Covid-19.
The duo will now go to National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for further assistance.
In Rahul and Patel's absence, the All-India Senior Selection Committee has named opener Ruturaj Gaikwad and all-rounder Deepak Hooda as their replacements in the T20I squad.
The three-T20I series will take place in Eden Gardens, Kolkata from February 16 to February 20.
Gaikwad did not get a single game in the ODI series as he was in isolation after testing positive for the virus.
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batting sensation recovered from the virus just ahead of the third ODI and did not get to make his debut in the 50-over format.
On the other hand, Hooda has had a decent debut series. The all-rounder contributed with cameos in the first two ODIs and was rested for the dead rubber. He also contributed with his off-spin by delivering a wicket in the second ODI to help India taken an unassailable lead.
The T20I series will also mark former Indian skipper Virat Kohli’s first T20I game since India’s early exit from T20 World Cup 2021 in United Arab Emirates (UAE).
India’s updated T20I squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Ishan Kishan, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Surya Kumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper), Venkatesh Iyer, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Ravi Bishnoi, Yuzvendra Chahal, Washington Sundar, Mohammed Siraj, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Avesh Khan, Harshal Patel, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Deepak Hooda
