Aiden Markram's stunning knock of 136 was key as South Africa recorded an emphatic five-wicket victory over Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final held at Lord's. This was only South Africa's second-ever ICC trophy triumph and was their first in 27 years. As the Proteas brought their long wait for an ICC title to an end, Markram's Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) teammate, Rishabh Pant shared a social media post congratulating him and South Africa for their triumph.
"Well played, Aiden brother . I am so happy for you - what a great knock under pressure. You have made us all proud and congratulations to South Africa on lifting the WTC mace," Pant wrote in a post on X.
Though LSG weren't able to make it to the playoffs during IPL 2025, Markram had a great campaign with the bat under the leadership of Pant. The South Africa batter scored a total of 445 runs in 13 matches during the season, surpassing the 50-run mark on five occasions.
Markram and Bavuma gave major contributions in South Africa's victory
Meanwhile, after being given a target of 282 to chase by Australia on the third day in the WTC final, the duo of Markram and skipper Temba Bavuma formed a brilliant 147-run stand to propel the Proteas towards the target. While the former scored a fine century, the latter also played a valiant knock of 66 as South Africa chased down the total on the fourth day.
It was wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne who scored the winning runs as the entire South Africa team celebrated at the balcony of the iconic stadium. Bavuma couldn't control his emotions and was left teary-eyed following the victory as South Africa captured their first major international title of this century.
The victory also saw the Proteas extend their unbeaten streak in red-ball cricket to nine matches. They haven't lost a single game in their last four Test series and will be looking to further extend this record in their next Test assignment which will be a two-match series against India and will commence from November 14.
