MI seal second WPL title with thrilling 8-run win over DC in final as Harmanpreet Kaur's captain's knock dampens Marizanne Kapp's all-round heroics

Harmanpreet Kaur's Mumbai Indians (MI) clinched their second Women's Premier League (WPL) title after defeating Delhi Capitals (DC) by 8 runs in a thrilling final at the Brabourne Cricket stadium on March 15.

Mumbai Indians win second WPL title 

Batting first MI posted a challenging total of 149/7 in the WPL 2025 final against DC, thanks to captain Harmanpreet Kaur's 66-run knock. In reply, DC batters wilted under pressure as they ran out of steam in the end and eventually fell short of 8 runs to lose the coveted final despite Marizanne Kapp's fighting 26-ball 40.

Notably, it was DC's third straight defeat in the WPL final. Nat Sciver-Brunt (3/30), the season's Purple Cap holder, showcased her mastery with cutters, causing Delhi's collapse under pressure. Apart from Marizanne Kapp's valiant 40 off 26 balls, the Delhi batting lineup faltered in the crucial final. Meg Lanning (13), Shafali Verma (4), Jess Jonassen (13), Jemimah Rodrigues (30), and Annabel Sutherland (2), a batting order considered strong by any standard, succumbed to soft dismissals, unable to withstand the sustained pressure applied by the Mumbai bowlers.

Earlier, MI managed to post a competitive total of 149/7 against DC, largely thanks to a strong innings from their captain, Harmanpreet Kaur. Delhi Capitals, having won the toss, chose to field first and quickly put pressure on the MI openers. Hayley Matthews was dismissed early, scoring only 3 runs, and Yastika Bhatia soon followed, managing just 8. The initial wickets, both taken by Marizanne Kapp, left MI struggling at 14/2.

However, Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat Sciver-Brunt then initiated a crucial counterattack, forming an 89-run partnership that stabilized the MI innings. Sciver-Brunt was eventually dismissed for 30 by Shree Charani, which triggered a brief collapse in the MI batting lineup.

A mini-collapse followed the dismissal of Sciver-Brunt, with Amelia Kerr and Sajeevan Sajana falling quickly, leaving Mumbai Indians at 112/5. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who had anchored the innings with a well-constructed 66 off 44 balls, featuring nine boundaries and two sixes, was then dismissed. G Kamalini also contributed 10 runs before being dismissed. Amanjot Kaur and Sanskriti Gupta added valuable runs towards the end, finishing unbeaten with 14 and 8 runs respectively, pushing Mumbai's total to 149/7. For Delhi Capitals, Marizanne Kapp delivered an outstanding bowling performance, taking 2/11. Jess Jonassen and Shree Charani each took two wickets, with figures of 2/26 and 2/43 respectively, while Annabel Sutherland contributed with 1/29.
