Own goal helps France overcome stubborn Austria before Mbappe suffers facial injury, gets booked by referee for time-wasting tactics

Star forward Kylian Mbappe suffered a facial injury and was replaced as France beat a stubborn Austria in their campaign opener at the Euro 2024. In the Group D game at Dusseldorf Arena on June 17, the only goal scored for France was an own goal.

In the 38th minute, Austria's Maximilian Wober was desperate to cut out the danger posed by a cross from Mbappe who cut past three defenders. He tried to head it away but ended up beating Austria goalkeeper Patrick Pentz to score an own goal and give France a lead.

Both France and Austria had three shots on target but the latter could not find the equaliser. Austria received as many as five yellow cards as they committed 18 fouls in the game.

Mbappe got injured in the 88th minute of the game. He clashed heads with Austria defender Kevin Danso. The 25-year-old fell on the ground in pain. Goalkeeper Pent called for medical attention as Mbappe's jersey was covered with blood following to blow to the nose.

Booked for time-wasting tactics

Mbappe tried to push through the pain in the final few minutes but fell on the ground again. Austrian fans took it for time-wasting tactics and referee shared their sentiment. He was booked by referee Jesus Gil Manzano and was replaced by Oliver Giroud.

Deschamps wants Mbappe to go on

This was France coach Didier Deschamps' 100th win. Deschamps said that Mbappe's injury looked bad.

"He has got a really bad nose, We'll have to wait and see, the medical staff are dealing with it. We'll have to see what's going to be done and then how long it will take. It is very bad news for us tonight," Deschamps said.

The 55-year-old did not reveal whether Real Madrid's new recruit will be available for the remaineder of the tournament. France are set to play Netherlands in their next Group D game on June 21. Netherlands are currently at the top of Group D after a 2-1 win against Poland.
