The 2026 Asian Games are set to end on October 4th with their official closing ceremony; however, India’s campaign ended a day earlier. The country’s multi-sport event journey in Aichi-Nagoya concluded on a high note this weekend, with not only finishing fourth on the medal table with 21 golds, 27 silvers and 37 bronzes for a total of 85 medals, but also locking in several crucial qualification spots for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

Following their victories in the gold medal matches in designated events, Indian athletes and teams confirmed berths in men’s and women’s hockey as well as key archery disciplines, giving the country an early foothold in the next Olympic cycle. The most stunning team successes came on the hockey pitch. Here is the list of players and teams who qualified early for the LA Summer Olympics from the Asian Games 2026 gold wins.
Women’s hockey team
On Friday, the Indian women’s team ended a 44-year wait for Asian Games gold by defeating defending champions China 1-0 in the final. Forward Lalremsiami scored the only goal in the 10th minute with a powerful reverse-stick shot. Goalkeeper and captain Savita Punia produced a series of crucial saves, including one from a penalty stroke, as India withstood sustained Chinese pressure in the closing stages.
China came close to scoring an equalizer after India conceded a penalty stroke; however, it was saved by Savita’s stunning one-handed save. The victory marked India’s second women’s hockey gold at the Asian Games, the previous one coming on home soil in New Delhi in 1982. India did reach the final in the 1998 amd 2018 editions, but the side had to settle for silver both times.
Meanwhile, Deepika, who became the first from the country to win the Poligras Magic Skill Award for a solo goal against the Netherlands in 2025, finished as the tournament’s top scorer with 21 goals. The gold also secured a direct qualification place for the women’s team at the Los Angeles Olympics, a return after missing the Paris 2024 Games.
Men’s hockey team
A day later, the men’s team completed a historic hockey double by retaining their Asian Games title with a commanding 5-1 victory over Malaysia. Captain Harmanpreet Singh led from the front with a brace, while Jugraj Singh, Hardik Singh and Shilanand Lakra also found the net to make it five. Malaysia’s sole reply came from Shello Silverius, which was not enough. The result made India only the second nation after Pakistan to successfully defend the men’s hockey title at the Asian Games and gave the country its fifth gold in the event overall, with previous wins in 1966, 1998, 2014 and 2022.
Veteran midfielder Manpreet Singh collected his third Asian Games gold, becoming the first Indian man to achieve the feat. Harmanpreet became the first Indian captain to lead the side to two continental titles. The win booked India’s place at LA 2028 as the third team to do so, following the host United States and FIH Pro League winners Belgium as one of the early qualifiers. For the first time, both Indian hockey teams stood atop the Asian Games podium in the same edition.
Archery: Compound Mixed Team of Chikitha Taniparthi and Sahil Jadhav
Archery provided further Olympic pathways and individual landmarks. In the compound mixed team event, which will make its Olympic debut in Los Angeles, Chikitha Taniparthi and Sahil Jadhav delivered a dramatic victory over South Korea. The pair finished level at 157-157 after the regulation arrows, forcing a shoot-off.
India scored 20 to South Korea’s 19 to claim gold and become the first nation to secure a quota in the new Olympic discipline. The victory formed part of a strong compound campaign in which India swept the men’s, women’s and mixed team titles. Chikitha, making her Asian Games debut, collected two golds, while Sahil also featured in the successful men’s team defence.
Archery: Women’s Individual Recurve; Kumkum Mohod
In women’s individual recurve, Kumkum Mohod made history, becoming the first Indian woman to win the Asian Games individual title. The 17-year-old defeated South Korea’s Oh Yejin 6-5 in a tense shoot-off after the match was tied at 5-5. Mohod’s composure under pressure, finding the 10-ring with her final arrow, secured both the gold and an individual Olympic quota place for India in women’s recurve. Her success capped a productive archery campaign that also included a women’s recurve team gold.
These qualifications carry particular weight because the Asian Games serve as a continental pathway to the Olympics in several sports. In hockey, the champions earn a direct berth. In archery, gold and, in some cases, silver in specific individual and team events award quota places to the National Olympic Committee, which then selects athletes who meet subsequent standards.
Compound archery’s Olympic introduction adds an extra layer of significance to the mixed team success. The early berths allow Hockey India and the Archery Association of India to plan preparation cycles with greater certainty. For the hockey teams, the focus can shift toward refining systems, integrating younger players and targeting podium finishes rather than merely qualification. In archery, the confirmed places provide a foundation on which the federation can build depth across both recurve and the newly Olympic compound events.
India’s overall performance in Aichi-Nagoya, while short of the record 106 medals achieved in Hangzhou three years earlier, demonstrated continued strength in traditional areas such as hockey, kabaddi, cricket and shooting, alongside emerging consistency in archery and boxing. The late surge of gold medals, including those that carried Olympic value, ensured a top-five finish and left Indian sport with tangible targets for the next two years.
When are the LA Summer Olympics?
The Summer Olympics hosted by Los Angeles are scheduled for 14 July to 30 July in the United States. It will feature the return of baseball/softball and cricket for the first time since 1900 and lacrosse for the first time since 1908.
