Aston Martin's star driver Fernando Alonso believes that Aston Martin needs an overhaul for 2025. He stated that the current performance of its AMR24 Formula 1 car is not good enough. Alonso also emphasized the team’s anticipation for Adrian Newey's arrival in March, noting that while it won’t impact the car's design for next season, it is expected to help improve their performance in 2026. He pointed out that Aston Martin's simulations had indicated they would be the "seventh- or eighth-fastest" in Singapore, a prediction he surpassed by qualifying seventh. However, Lance Stroll qualified in 17th place.
Looking to the future, Alonso stressed that the team cannot afford to ignore the 2025 season while focusing solely on 2026. He urged the design team to change the pace next year to achieve better results and enhance their competitiveness.
"I think 2026 is in our heads, for everyone at Aston, and the biggest hope with Adrian coming, Enrico [Cardile] and some other names. This is going to be great, and the future looks bright, but 2025 is... we need to shake things a little bit. I mean, it's not good enough what we are doing right now, and 2025 we need to change the pace," said Alonso
He believes that the team started well in the initial stages but the developments took confidence away from Alonso and Stroll.
"Right now, I'm applying all the efforts to overcome a little bit the lack of pace. A lot of work has been done between Baku and here. Yesterday, we left the computer at 2am. We have been increasing the work to find answers, more than ever now. We are putting everything in, but we are finding that, you know, there are no miracles to be made here on track, and we need the help from the factory now in terms of development of the car," Alonso added.
Aston Martin is currently ranked 5th in the Constructor Championship 2024 with 82 points, while in the driver's standings, they are ranked 9th and 10th. Alonso is ranked 9th while Stroll is ranked 10th. The action now shifts to the Singapore Grand Prix 2024.
